Crane Cams Victim of Bad Economy
From Blue 7 Racing
Crane Cams, makers of racing camshafts for dozens of years, has ceased operations and closed its doors nationally, including a plant on Fentress Boulevard, not far from Daytona International Speedway as Jim Witters of the Daytona Beach News Journal reports. Crane, founded in Hallandale, Florida in the 50's, was well known in racing circles.
The destruction of bubbles bursting in nasty bear markets like the one we are experiencing now leave few stones unturned. Sad news.
If you have any race related information that would be of interest to our league members, pass it along and I will make effort to post it

Week 2 Commentary
For the first time in 12 years, a Daytona 500 winner has won the following week as Matt Kenseth held off Jeff Gordon to capture the AutoClub 500 at AutoClub Speedway in Fontana, CA. Gordon was the last driver to do it, following up Daytona by winning at Rockingham in 1997.The Conway Racers had another interesting week as GIRLS Racing*, a newly formed team, won week 2. Following GIRLS racing in the top 5 were Lisa Las Vegas, S&T Racing, Fitz Racing*, Team ISH* and BMF Lugnuts*.
Among the big movers toward the front this week were GIRLS Racing*, Team Leboski, BMF Lugnuts*, Lisa Las Vegas, Blue 7 Racing^, Team ISH*, Brady Bunch* and the Gas Man. Even Team SIMBO had a good run.
Pushing too many RPM'S on the engine this week were Club BDawg*, WTC Racing, JD Racing*, Team Annihilation*, Budah and Motorcare Racing.
I held on to the top spot (first time ever leading two weeks in a row) and O Racing stayed in second. Rounding out the top five are Brian Racing*, Snookbabe and Fitz Racing*.
This week we stay out west and run the Shelby 427 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, one of three tracks Tony Stewart remains winless on and Jimmie Johnson has owned of late.
Las Vegas is great fun for the drivers and fans, and a hauler parade is scheduled for Friday Night.
Jeff Burton is a two time winner here, and he needs a good run. The green flag is scheduled for 4:46PM. Please visit our sponsors if you get a chance for race coverage.
Have a good week!

500 Champ Kenseth on Letterman
Matt Kenseth, our 2009 Daytona 500 champion, makes the media rounds with a stop at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City for an appearance on The David Lettterman Show. Take a listen:
WEEK 1 Commentary
Congratulations to Matt Kenseth and owner Jack Roush of the #17 DeWalt Tools Ford for bringing home the rain shortened Daytona 500. Roush had not had winner from his stable in over 23 of racing the 500.
The Conway NASCAR League got off and running for the 2009 season as well. Although a few new racers had some issues logging in, dropped the flag in fine fashion.
Normally I am checking oil in the drip pan after the 500, but behind the stellar piloting of AJ Allmendinger and David Ragan, I managed to get the high score. The newly formulated rules of buckets of beer to the weekly point leader no doubt provided the proper incentive. I have not ran point since leaving the Daytona 500 in 2002.
Following me across the start finish line were O Racing, RP5 Racing, Oiler^ and Tippy Twister, who had a wonderful weekend.
Normally powerful Ford Racing Team Boy Racing, Inc. was unable to capitalize on the Roush win as they has major issues and find themselves near the tail end of the field. WHS Racing, Team Taser, who ran strong in his rookie campaign a year ago, and rookie Chevy Intimidators* spent time in the garage area.
Next week we head out west to California for the Auto Club 500 on Sunday. The green flag is scheduled to drop at 6:15PM. Oh I long for those 1PM starts. The stands were packed for the 500, so we shall see how turnout is out in Fontana.
Have a good week!

Kenseth Wins Daytona 380
Matt Kenseth in his DeWalt Tools Ford Fusion snapped a 36 race winlees streak to caprute the rain shortened 51st running of the Great American Race, the Daytona 500.
Without the rain, it appears certain that the running order would have been quite different had we completed 500 miles, but it is what is and rain had been a threat all afternoon.
Got to give a a shout out to AJ Allmendinger, who in his first 500 came home third after racing his way in. We will continue to talk about Jr. getting in to Vickers, who sounded off about the incident. I do remember Vickers taking out Jr. and Jimmie Johnson at Talladega a few years back.
Congrats to Burke and Tippy Twister and as Robert Plant and the boys once belted, were Going To California.

Newman and Stewart Crash in Practice
Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart will have to go to backup cars and start the 500 at the rear of the field after practice crash. Newman had a right rear Goodyear Eagle (GT:NYSE) blow, which caused him to spin and collect Stewart, who is none too pleased.

Did you notice the seats on the frontstretch were almost full, which could be signaling something with regard to the economy. They predict a sellout for Sunday.

Bumpy Ride As We Approach Speedweeks
It has been a tumultuous off season for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with the downturn in the economy weighing heavily. You could see the empty seats at many of the tracks last year as the economy started tanking on the heels of the housing crisis. NASCAR was not immune, as several college football stadiums felt the pinch as well.
There have been mergers and the shutdown of team operations, and many existing powerful teams downsized staff members as chronicled by Jayski in the following chart:
The Unofficial NASCAR related Layoff Count since end of the 2008 season:(exceptions noted)Dale Earnhardt Inc -- 116
Ganassi -- approx 100
Earnhardt-Ganassi -- 40 (1-19-2009)
Ganassi engine shop -- more than 20
Gillett Evernham Motorsports -- 65
Petty Enterprises -- 65
Bill Davis Racing -- 60
Richard Petty Driving Experience -- approx 45
Roush Fenway Racing -- 40-50
Hendrick Motorsports -- 19
Furniture Row -- 25 [approx]
Earnhardt-Childress Racing Technologies -- 25 [approx]
Yates-Roush Engines -- 25
Wood Brothers -- 22
Stewart-Haas -- 16
Richard Childress Racing -- 15
Red Bull Racing -- approx 15
JTG Daugherty Racing -- 12
Michael Waltrip Racing -- 12
Ernie Elliott Inc [Ganassi engines] -- 9
Joe Gibbs Engines -- approx 5
Hall of Fame -- heard many were let go over the winter, no number yet(as of 1-19-2009)
If you have been watching television coverage of Speedweeks, you did not hear much about the pink elephant in the room. During an interview on Speed TV, Darrell Waltrip began to discuss the economic issues and was immediately cut off. Popular blog The Daly Planet covered the whole situation. In short, Waltrip accurately noted that everyone, even those that are broke, will bring what they got to Daytona in hopes of making the show, but when we go to California, it may be a ghost town, particularly for the Truck series and the Nationwide Series. I think Waltrip is right, and he should have not had his voice shackled. Finally, Waltrip "cleared the air" on his blog. We get enough dancing around the issues in government, we sure don't need it at the High Banks.
It is difficult to note that Petty Enterprises is no longer, merging with Gillett Evernham. Bill Davis sold out the majority of his team, and who can even keep up with owner points as we set the field for the Great American Race. 2009 should prove to be a very interesting year.
